Adding Value to the IS’97... Curriculum Models: An Interactive Visualization
and Analysis Prototype
With David
Johnson, Ph.D., and others. Published in
The Journal of Information Systems Education (JISE), 12/02

Abstract
Several efforts
have been undertaken in the information systems (IS) arena to develop a model
IS curriculum. Most notable of these is the IS’97 model that contains not only
a list of suggested IS courses but also other sub-course and super-course
constructs such as presentation areas, learning units, knowledge elements, and
knowledge levels. The richness of this model is intended to enhance its
usefulness in understanding the details of a curriculum. However, this
richness adds a level of complexity that makes it difficult for all but the
dedicated scholar to understand the intricacies of the model beyond the
highest level constructs (courses) when reading the IS’97 document.
This paper describes the development of an
interactive prototype based on IS’97 that captures the details of the model
within a relational database in an attempt to make it more useful and readily
applicable to a variety of curriculum-related activities. Various forms,
queries, and reports were developed to make understanding the model easier and
to provide interactive capabilities to help faculty, students, and others
experiment with the model. Efforts at utilizing the prototype for curriculum
visualization and analysis are presented which help to add value to the existing
IS’97 document. Finally, the paper concludes with a proposal to extend the IS’97
model constructs into a curriculum management system for an academic
institution.

► Information Literacy and IT Competency in the Information
Age: A Critical Overview of Corporate IT Education Sourcing
With David Johnson,
Ph.D.
Paper published in the proceedings
and presented at the Information Systems Education Conference (ISECON 2000),
Philadelphia, November 2000.
Abstract
Many
companies desiring or compelled to move aggressively into electronic commerce or
otherwise transfer business processes to leading edge technologies are
wondering whether they possess the wherewithal to do it. Beyond the purely
technical issues there exists the broader cultural challenge of adapting their
organizations to new business and information paradigms. This paper briefly
examines current education and training sources—including degree-based
programs, corporate universities, and training vendors—designed to help
companies attain (and maintain) this crucial IT competency. Our purpose is to
assess the relative effectiveness of these alternatives, especially in terms of
a core determinant of organizational IT competency at the employee level:
information literacy. This refers to a mixture of IT knowledge, skills,
perceptions and values that determines an individual's IT perspective. In our
scheme it is composed of two fundamental areas, which we call technical literacy
and business literacy.

ERP (SAP R/3) Via the Internet: A Student Perspective
With Merten
Foerster. Paper published in the proceedings and presented at the 4th
Australasian Institute of Higher Learning Forum, Brisbane, Australia, July 2000
Abstract
This paper presents a student
perspective of an ERP (SAP R/3) course delivered via the Internet and involving
an international collaboration between universities, instructors, and students
in Germany and the United States. Content, methods and approaches are examined
from this student perspective. We explore the psychological and social issues
involved in learning this subject via this mode of delivery, as much as the
technical and procedural ones. The authors additionally use the experience,
together with subsequent ones as interns with an R/3-focused consulting group,
to discuss SAP R/3 learning issues generally.
► Information
Systems Literacy: A Framework for Assessment
With David
Johnson, Ph.D. Paper published in the proceedings and presented at the 3rd
Annual Conference of the Southern Association for Information Systems, Atlanta,
April 2000
Abstract:
The critical importance of
information systems (IS) in today's business enterprise can hardly be
overstated. Yet many businesses and even IS professionals lack a complete
understanding of what is required to achieve all the benefits of IS—they
lack IS literacy. For organizations striving to take full advantage of IS, it is
desirable to assess the level of IS literacy of their employees and to compare
this with an appropriate standard for those employees' roles and for the
enterprise as a whole. This paper describes a conceptual framework based on
other models reported in the literature and designed to help develop such an
assessment approach. The intent of the framework is to utilize the IS literacy
dimensions to create assessment instruments that can measure the IS literacy of
individuals within the various employee groups. The results of such assessments
can then be used to determine the organization's overall level of IS literacy
and to make informed personnel decisions in areas such as hiring, training, and
outsourcing.
